The Monarchs hosted the Jaguars of South Alabama in Norfolk, Virginia, on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 1 pm. The Old Dominion Monarchs and South Alabama Jaguars are teams from the Sun Belt Conference. This game was South Alabama's and ODU's first conference game. The Lady Monarchs took the lead early in the game with aggressive play and drawing fouls. Kelsey Thompson was named Player of the Game with 13 points, three assists, and five rebounds. In the end, the Old Dominion Monarchs win 82 - 59.
The South Alabama Jaguars gain an advantage in the first quarter by scoring the first points. Nadia Howard assisted Daniela Gonzalez with a mid-range jumper. Daniela Gonzalez made a second jumper, giving the Jaguars a four-point lead. The Monarchs did not score within the first minute, but En'Dya Buford found her way to the rim, making a layup. Camryn Hill scored the next two points for the Monarchs, tying the game up at four.
The Old Dominion Monarchs took over the scoreboard at the four-minute mark with a six-point lead. Simaru Fields shot and made a three-pointer. Simaru Fields had 12 points, three assists, and three rebounds. Hama'ya Fielder came into the game and scored a three-pointer at the two-minute mark. Hama'ya Fielder had eight points and shot 100 percent from the field and beyond the arc. En'Dya Buford beat the buzzer with a made layup, giving the Monarchs an 11-point lead going into the second quarter.
ODU's shot selection led them to a 50 percent field goal percentage at halftime. They ended the game with a 44.9 shooting percentage. South Alabama shot 32.8 percent from the field. ODU shot 75 percent from the free-throw line. South Alabama shot 44.8 percent from the field. The Lady Monarchs grabbed 13 more rebounds than the Lady Jags.
