In a well matched game, the Monarchs overcome the Mustangs in Dallas.

The battle between the Mustangs and Monarchs was close on Sat., Nov. 9th, at the Moody Coliseum. The Lady Monarchs chased the Mustangs back to the locker room, defeating them 79 - 70. SMU started with a lead in the first quarter—their biggest lead was by 9. Simone Cunningham put Old Dominion on the board with two layups. Simone scored with seven minutes and 25 seconds in the first quarter. Then, her next put-back points came at six minutes and 55 seconds. SMU shot 12.5 percent from beyond the arc in the first quarter; the Monarchs shot 50 percent from beyond the arc. The Monarchs shot 41.2 percent from the field; the Mustangs shot 23.8 percent. Mariah Clayton and En'Dya Buford scored two out of four three-point shots in the first quarter. In addition, Camryn Hill scored four points with assists from Simaru Fields and Mariah Clayton. The first quarter ended with a score of 17 - 15, with ODU in the lead.
In the second quarter numbers, it's evident that the game was tight. The Mustangs and Monarchs went back and forth in the field. From the arc, it was evenly matched both teams shot six three-pointers, but the Monarchs saw the ball go through the net more. Both teams shot above 50 percent from beyond the arc. ODU shot 83.3 percent; SMU shot 66.7 percent. What wasn't so even was the rebounds, the Monarchs grabbed eight more rebounds, demolishing the Mustangs on the boards. The Monarch's bench points were extraordinary in the second quarter, outscoring the Mustangs by 20 points.

In the post-game interview, Delisha Milton-Jones said, "We guard everyone." It's not in the Monarch's game plan to guard one person. The Monarchs play team ball; it shows on defense and the point column. Nya Robertson was a force on the court, scoring 29 points. Robertson was the scoring leader for SMU. Mikayla Brown for ODU scored and rebounded her way to a double-double. Mikayla grabbed 10 boards and scored 13 points. Simaru Fields scored 13 points and grabbed three boards. En'Dya Buford's numbers were 19 points, seven assists, and nine rebounds. She needed three assists and one more rebound from a triple-double
ODU held the lead for the entire fourth quarter. The stampede of Mustangs could not trample the Monarchs. The Lady Monarchs played a solid basketball game for the entire 40 minutes. The Monarchs will be home in Norfolk, Va., for their next game versus Morgan State on Nov. 11th at 6:30 pm. Respectfully to the Veterans who have served the United States of America, this will be a Military Appreciation game.
