ODU takes a step back as the Toledo Rockets take off with their fifth straight win.

On Saturday, the 8th, the Old Dominion Monarchs and Toledo Rockets Play4Kay in the second MAC - SBC Challenge. After Toledo’s win, their record improved to 17-5. Toledo’s winning streak is alive, placing them at five straight wins. ODU takes a step back as the Toledo Rockets take off with their fifth straight win. The Monarchs drop to 14-11 with a four-game losing streak. The final score was 56-52. Listen to the full play-by-play here.


At the beginning of the game, the Monarchs were able to score their first possession. Brenda Fontana made a layup with assistance from En'Dya Buford. Khera Goss from the Rockets answered the Monarchs' two points with a made layup. It became a defensive battle after Jessica Cook made a layup assisted by Kendall Carruthers. Both scores came to a halt for two minutes and 21 seconds. 


Faith Fedd-Robinson put some points on the board for the Rockets with a mid-range jumper. The Monarchs' field goal percentage was low this game. The Monarchs shot 28.8 percent from the field, 31.8 percent from three point, and 77.8 percent from free throw. The Rockets shot 44.9 percent from the field, 40 percent from three point, and 54.5 percent from free throw. 


The Toledo Rockets grabbed 14 more rebounds than the Monarchs in this matchup. The Lady Monarchs have lost the past three games in rebounding. On Jan. 29th, they grabbed nine more rebounds than the Georgia State Panthers, but they lost by four points.


In the second quarter against Toledo, Simaru Fields helped the Monarchs cut Toledo’s 10-point lead down to four points. At the end of the second quarter, the Rockets were ahead by five points. 


Nan Garcia finished with 13 points and went 5 for 8 from the field. En'Dya Buford finished with 14 points and went 6 for 15 from the field. The Rockets altogether had 19 turnovers. The Monarchs had eight turnovers. The Monarchs had 32 rebounds, while the Rockets grabbed 46 rebounds. Sammi Mikonowicz pulled in 14 rebounds and scored nine points for Toledo. The Monarchs' next matchup will be against Marshall on Feb. 13th, 2025. It will be played at the Cam Henderson Center at 6:00 pm.
